National Anthem of Bangladesh | Symbols of Bangladesh

Amar Sonar Bangla Or “My Golden Bengal” (Bengali: আমার সোনার বাংলা) is the Official National Anthem of Bangladesh. The lyrics of the Bangladesh National Anthem was written by Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore in 1905 while the melody of the hymn was adopted from the Baul singer Gagan Harkara’s song “Ami Kothay Pabo Tare” (আমি কোথায় পাবো তারে) Set to Dadra Tala. The modern instrumental rendition was arranged by Samar Das.

The song was written in 1906 during the British partitioning of Bengal, a time of great national unrest. It became popular during the swadeshi movement in the first two decades of the 20th century. On 3 March 1971, the song was played at a meeting organized at Paltan Maidan by the Students League and the Sramik League.

On 23 March it was played when Swadhin Bangla Kendriya Chhatra Sangram Parishad held a ceremonial parade marking independence. The anthem was adopted in 1971 by the provisional government and officially approved after independence on January 13, 1972. According to the constitution, the first ten lines of the original poem (the portion reproduced on the right) are official.

National Anthem (Bangla)

National Anthem (English)

My Bengal of gold, I love you

Forever your skies, your air set my heart in tune

as if it were a flute.

In Spring, Oh mother mine, the fragrance from

your mango-groves makes me wild with joy,

Ah, what a thrill!

In Autumn, Oh mother mine,

in the full-blossomed paddy fields,

I have seen spread all over sweet smiles!

Ah, what a beauty, what shades, what an affection

and what a tenderness!

What a quiet have you spread at the feet of

banyan trees and along the banks of rivers!

Oh mother mine, words from your lips are like

Nectar to my ears!

Ah, what a thrill!

If sadness, Oh mother mine, casts a gloom on your face

my eyes are filled with tears!
