El Paso is a city located in the far southwestern part of the U.S. state of Texas. It is the largest of the US-Mexican border cities in the State of Texas. The current population of El Paso is 687,287, making it the 23rd-largest city in the United States, the sixth-largest city in Texas, and the second-largest city in the Southwestern United States behind Phoenix, Arizona.
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed on 2nd February 1848, ended the Mexican-American War (1846–48) and El Paso became part of the U.S. state of Texas. In 1873 El Paso was incorporated. El Paso has a strong federal and military presence. William Beaumont Army Medical Center, Biggs Army Airfield, and Fort Bliss are located in the area.
