History Of The Belgium Flag

Belgium is a very ancient nation. Belgium was mentioned by Julius Caesar about 2,000 years ago in his writings on the Gallic Wars. During the period of Austrian rule, a number of different national flags were tried, until the Austrian Emperor imposed the Austrian flag on the Brussels people. The population of Brussels was opposed to the Austrian flag. Prior to the Netherlands gaining control of Belgium, the country had a flag with horizontal rather than vertical bands. This black, yellow, and red flag had been the colors of Belgium since the late 1700s.

On 26 August 1830, the flag of France flew from the city hall of Brussels after the rioting at the Brussels Opera and the start of the Belgian Revolution. In November of that year, a National Congress of Belgium was elected. The newly designed National Flag Of Belgium, with the same colors but in a vertical striped pattern was finally introduced and officially adopted as the Flag Of Belgium in January 1831.
