The National Flag Of Benin Was Officially Adopted On November 16, 1959. The Flag Of Benin consisting of three colors Yellow, Red And Green. The Benin flag has a proportion of 2:3 and has two horizontal bands of red and yellow on the right side. Also a vertical green band on the hoist side. The colors featured in Benin’s flag have significant cultural, political, and regional meanings. The green on the Benin National Flag stood for the agriculture, the red for the revolution and socialism, and the red star itself for the national unity. As stated in the national anthem, the green of the flag represents the hope of a new democracy.

History of the Flag of Benin
Under French colonial rule over Dahomey, French authorities ban the colony from having its own regional flag. Because French authorities were worried that this could increase nationalistic sentiment and lead to calls for independence. However, as the wave of independence swept across the African continent, the French succumbed to pressure and allowed for the designing of a flag in 1958.

The new National Flag Of Benin, which was yellow, red and green, was adopted and used until 1972 when a new regime came to power through a coup. In a bid to align itself with communist ideals, the regime designed a new flag that was green and contained a 5-pointed crimson star in the canton. However, the Benin National Flag was never officially adopted by the law and was only used as a substitute. When the country became the People’s Republic of Benin, a new Benin National Flag was adopted.
