National Flag Of Cyprus

The National Flag Of The Republic Of Cyprus was adopted On 16 August 1960 after gaining independence from the United Kingdom. The Flag Of Cyprus was designed by art teacher İsmet Güney and it was chosen by the President of the Republic Makarios III and the Vice-President Fazil Kucuk as the result of the flag design competition. The Design Of the Cyprus National Flag Consists of a yellow silhouette of the island and two crossed branches on a white background.

 

Design And Symbolism

The design of the flag represents peace with its white background and the green olive branches beneath the map of the island. Interestingly, Cyprus is the only country to display its land area on its official flag. The color on the National Flag Of Cyprus is copper-colored, in keeping with the countries heritage. It symbolizes the rich reserves of copper on the island, the Greek name that gave the name of Cyprus. C

According to the Cyprus Constitution, People Of Cyprus may fly the flag of Cyprus alongside either the Greek flag, the Turkish flag, or both. This Cyprus flag is not seen in the north of the island, otherwise known as the TRNC – the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. There the Cyprus National Flag flown is a reverse of the Turkish flag. It is white and has a red star, a crescent and two red lines at the top and bottom of the flag.
