The National Flag Of Eritrea was officially adopted On December 5, 1995. Background

The first National Flag Of Eritrea was officially adopted on September 15, 1952, the day British authorities relinquished control over the area and four days before the Ethiopian-Eritrean Federation became effective. The resistance to the annexation of Eritrea by Ethiopia resulted in a struggle for independence being waged by the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) from September 1961 until May 1991 when the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF) defeated the Ethiopian forces and took control of the country. The new Flag Of Eritrea was first officially hoisted at the proclamation of independence on May 24, 1993.
