National Flag Of Fiji

National Flag Of Fiji

The National Flag Of Fiji Was Officially Adopted On October 10, 1970. The coat of arms On the flag has been slightly modified but the Flag Of Fiji has remained the same as during Fiji’s colonial period. The Design Of the Flag features a light blue field with the British Union Jack in the upper left corner and there is a shield on the right. The flag also consists of the pictures of the two Fijian warriors on each side of the shield and the motto “Rerevaka na Kalou ka Doka na Tui” below the shield. These words mean “Fear God and honor the Queen”.

There is a red band across the top of the band is a lion holding a peeled coconut. The remainder of the shield is quartered by a St. George Cross. In the Fiji National Flag, there are three sugar canes and a coconut palm in the two top sections on the shield. A dove with an olive branch and a bunch of bananas are in the two bottom quarters. The design of the Flag Of Fiji was selected as the result of a joint contest won by Mr. Robi Wilcock and Ms. Murray Mac Kenzie.

The Symbolism Of Fiji’s Current Flag

The Union Jack and St George’s Cross represents the once close connection with Britain. The light blue field on the National Flag Of Fiji represents the Pacific Ocean. The sugar cane, bananas, and coconut signify the rich lush land and its agricultural production. The dove is a symbol of peace. The shield on the Fiji National Flag is derived from the country’s official coat of arms, originally granted by Royal Warrant in 1908.

Brief History Of The Flag

The Bau, Rewa, Cakaudrove, Macuata, Naduri, and Lakeba joined together In 1865 to create the United Tribes of Fiji. They adopted a Flag Of Fiji which was a blue field with a large white five-pointed star in the center. In 1874 Fiji became a British colony and the British flag was adopted.

The country gained a British Blue Ensign in 1908 with a white disc and coat of arms. In 1970 Fiji became a Dominion with the Queen of England. The National Flag Of Fiji was a sky blue field with a national flag top left and the shield of the coat of arms center-right. When Fiji became a republic in 1987, the flag remained the same as before.
