The Flag Of Georgia Which is also known as The “Five Cross Flag” Obtain Its official status On 14 January 2004. The current Georgian flag was used by the Georgian patriotic movement following the country’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. In 1999 the Parliament of Georgia passed a bill to restore the red-on-white cross design of the Flag Of Georgia. The bill was not endorsed by the President, Eduard Shevardnadze. Following the events of the “Rose Revolution” in October 2003, New President Mikhail Saakashvili began changing the Georgia National Flag. The flag of the 1918 Republic was changed to the five-cross flag.

 

Design And Meaning Of The Flag

The basic design of Georgian National Flag was in use over 500 years ago as it was previously the flag of the medieval Georgian kingdom. The National Flag Of Georgia is a white rectangle, with in its central portion a large red cross touching all four sides of the flag. In the four corners, there are four bolnur-katskhuri crosses (Also refer as Georgian Crosses aside with Grapevine cross) of the same color (as the large cross). Rectangular and four small crosses on a white background of the flag represent the general Christian symbols that embody Jesus Christ the Savior and the four evangelists.

This general Christian symbol, as a heraldic sign was first recorded in 1099 on the arms of crusader Godfrey Bouillon, this way he was given the title of defender of the Holy Sepulcher. Ever since, this heraldic symbol was the personification of the Holy Sepulcher and also the center of Christianity – Jerusalem. It is known by three names – Godfrey Bouillon’s emblem, Jerusalem’s emblem and the Holy sign.
