National Flag Of Greece

National Flag Of Greece

On December 22, 1978, The National Flag Of Greece Was Officially Adopted As the National Symbols. The Flag of Greece changed many times during the Greek history. Today, the flag recognized by the blue and white colors on it. Often referred to as the “blue-white”, the present Flag Of Greece is based on nine horizontal stripes of blue alternating with white.

This has not been the official Greece National Flag for many centuries, but it first appeared in the First National Assembly that took place in January 1822 in Epidaurus, less than a year after the beginning of the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Turks.

Design And Meaning Of The Flag

The Flag Of Greece consists of an equal-armed white cross on a blue ground in the upper left corner of the flag, with the remaining area filled with nine alternating blue-and-white horizontal stripes. The top and bottom stripes of the flag are always blue. The shade of blue used in the Greece National Flag has varied throughout its history, from light blue to dark blue, the latter being increasingly used since the late 1960s.

The nine stripes are said to represent that there are 9 syllabuses in the phrase “ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ Ή ΘΑΝΑΤΟΣ” which translated to English means “Freedom or Death”. This phrase was adopted during the revolution against the Ottoman empire. This phrase was symbolizing and is still inspiring the determination against tyranny defying the fear of death like the Greeks did in 1821. In terms of Greek mythology, the nine stripes on the Greece National Flag could refer to the nine muses, with the blue-and-white colors representing Aphrodite rising up from the sea foam

The cross on the National Flag Of Greece symbolizes Eastern Orthodox Christianity. The blue and white colors on the flag have been identified as the traditional colors of Greece: blue symbolizes the sky and the sea, white symbolizes the clouds and the waves.

Historical Background Of The Flag

The origins of the present Flag Of Greece with its cross-and-stripe pattern are a matter of debate. Every part of the flag can be connected to very old historical elements. However, it is difficult to establish “continuity”, especially as there is no record of the exact reasoning behind its official adoption in early 1822.

In the 19th century, Greece was ruled by the Ottoman Empire. The desire for religious freedom and cultural development led to a nationalist revolt and the proclamation of Greek independence in the 1820s. Many revolutionary flags were displayed locally, including some banners of black-white-red stripes, others of white with various traditional symbols, and some blue incorporating saints and revolutionary slogans. In March 1822 the colors blue and white, expressing dedication to the Greek Orthodox faith, was adopted for two versions of the National Flag Of Greece.
