The first flag in the Haiti region was Burgundy cross due to the area being a Spanish Colony. The region was called the Captaincy General of Santo Domingo. From 1625 Part of Haiti was name Saint-Domingue and under French control. The flag flown as the Flag Of Haiti in that area was the pre-French Revolution flag. It contained a crowned shield from the Royal Coat of Arms on a plain white field. The French acquired the whole of Santo Domingo and the blue-white-red vertical tricolor flag was adopted In 1794.

In 1803 a blue-red bicolor revolution flag with white text stating “Liberty or Death” was adopted as a revolution Flag Of Haiti against the French. By 1804 the country was free from French control and renamed The Empire of Haiti. Haiti split into two factions in 1806. Northern Haiti became the State of Haiti with an equal parts dark blue and red bicolor flag. Southern Haiti became the Republic of Haiti and adopted a blue-red horizontal bicolor with the coat of arms in the center.

Between 1964 and 1986 the Haiti National Flag was changed to the black-red bicolor of the First Empire with the coat of arms at the center by President Jean-Claude Duvalier. In 1986 the blue-red horizontal bicolor flag with the coat of arms at the center was adopted as the National Flag Of Haiti and the bicolor flag without the coat of arms as the civil flag.
