National Flag Of Hungary

The Hungary National Flag Was made official On May 23, 1957. The Flag Of Hungary is a horizontal tricolor flag of red, white, and green from the top to the bottom respectively. The red, white and green tricolor was adopted as the basis for the Hungarian flag around the time of Hungary’s failed revolution in 1848 against the Habsburg Empire. Although the colors of the National Flag Of Hungary come from the Hungarian Coat of Arms, which dates back centuries earlier.

The Hungary flag has undergone many changes. While the red, white and green stripes have been the basis for successive Hungarian flags since 1848, variations of the Hungarian Coat of Arms have at times been placed in the middle. The current-day plain tricolor without any additional symbols on it was instated on 12 October 1957 and has remained unchanged since that time.

Symbolism

The red of Hungary’s flag is said to stand for strength or bloodshed (in battle), the white for faithfulness or freedom, and the green for hope or the green fields of Hungary. This flag has been the Hungary National Flag since the middle of the 20th century, though these colors have been present in flags representing Hungary for centuries.

Three Colors Uniting The Nation

The red-white-green tricolor became a strong national symbol during the revolution of 1848-49. In these times, the colors were representative of the nation, appearing in the Hungary National Flag carried by the Hungarian soldiers. The findings of the heraldist Oszkár Bárczay prove that the colors red and white became national colors before the green.

According to some, red and white were national colors years before the revolution. After the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 was defeated, the three colors were prohibited as symbols by the Austrian Emperor. However, after the Compromise of 1867, the tricolor became not only a national symbol but also the official National Flag Of Hungary.

Evolution Of The Flag

The current tricolor Flag Of Hungary first emerged as a symbol of national sovereignty during the campaigns against the Habsburgs from 1848 to 1849. Unfortunately, the rebellion in Hungary was squashed and the Austrian Emperor declared the tricolor illegal. Following the end of the Habsburg Empire in 1918, the period between 1918 and 1920 was difficult for the Hungary people and some changes were made to the Hungary National Flag.

Minor modifications were made to the Flag Of Hungary between 1946 and 1949 as well as 1949 when it was replaced by a red star. However, all of this changed in 1957 during the Stalinist restoration that saw the official National Flag Of Hungary change to the current tricolor without the coat of arms.
