The three colors used in the Iraq National Flag are the Pan-Arab colors that feature in many flags of the Arab world. Each color represents a different era in the shared history of the Arab people. The symbolism of colors is as follows: red stands for bravery, white for generosity, black for victory, and green is the traditional color of Islam.

History Of The Flag Of Iraq

The first Flag Of Iraq was adopted in 1921, and it was derived from the flag of the Arab Revolt that fought against the Ottoman Empire during the first world war. The flag was similar to the flag of Jordan, which shared a royal dynasty with Iraq at the time. In 1958 Iraq joined Jordan to create the Arab Federation. The National Flag Of Iraq adopted was similar to the national flag with the removal of the stars and a red triangle replacing the trapezoid.

A revolution led by Abdul Karim Qassim in 1958 caused the country to become a Republic and a new black-white-green vertical tricolor Iraq National Flag with yellow sun and red triangular rays. Qassim’s government was overthrown in 1963 and The Ba’ath party took control of Iraq. The replacement instituted a flag that bears a clear resemblance to the modern flag. It was inspired by the flag of the Arab Liberation movement, so it resembled many other Arab flags from the time. In 2008 two more National Flag Of Iraq were proposed, one with the stars removed and a golden sun with green rays at the center and one with “GOD IS GREAT” in gold rather than green.
