The National Flag Of Kuwait was adopted on September 7, 1961, and was first flown On November 24, 1961. The flag consists of a horizontal rectangle that is twice its width. Its width is divided into three horizontal stripes of equal size: The top, green; the middle part, white; and the lower part, red.
The face next to the flagpole forms the base of a black trapezoid of the same size as the width of the Flag Of Kuwait, and its small base is equivalent to the width of the white stripe, and its height is equal to the fourth part of the length of the Kuwait National Flag. The black on the flag represents the defeat of the enemy, and the red symbolizes the blood on the sword of Kuwait; White symbolizes purity, and the green represents the fertile lands of Kuwait. The meaning of the colors came from a poem by Safie Al-Deen Al-Hali:
White are our deeds
Black are our battles
Green are our lands
Red are our swords
History Of The Flag
During the period of Ottoman rule in Kuwait, the Ottoman flag, red with a white crescent and star, was used. This flag was retained after the country became a British protectorate in the Anglo-Kuwaiti Agreement of 1899. A few months after the outbreak of World War I, a British ship in the Persian Gulf fired on a Kuwaiti vessel that was flying the Ottoman flag. To avoid similar mistakes in the future, Britain encouraged Kuwait to create their own National Flag Of Kuwait.
The new Flag Of Kuwait was red, like most Arab flags in the Persian Gulf, and had the name of the country written on it in white Arabic script. In addition, the shahādah (Muslim profession of faith) was sometimes used on the flag. It was used with or without the special logo of the Ṣabāḥ family. Kuwait as a British protectorate continued to use that Flag Of Kuwait until January 22, 1956, when the shahādah and dynastic Ṣabāḥ logo were formally established as part of the design. Five years later Kuwait obtained its independence on June 19, 1961.
