The Flag Of Liberia Was Designed after Flag of the US. It was officially adopted On August 24, 1847. The Liberian National Flag bears a close resemblance to the flag of the United States; showing the ex-American and ex- Caribbean slaves origins of the country. The “American Colonization Society” was established in 1816 by Abolitionists who felt that freed slaves should be helped in returning to Africa. The land was purchased from local tribes on the West African coast, and the colony founded there known as Liberia, from the Latin word liber (“free”).
Liberia proclaimed its independence on July 26, 1847. A National Flag Of Liberia was needed, and a committee of women was made responsible for its design. The Committee substituted a star for the cross, symbolizing Liberia’s status as the only independent Western-style state in Africa.
