History Of The Flag

Liechtenstein was formed in 1719 as a principality within the Holy Roman Empire. It gained complete independence in 1866. Traditionally, flags of territories ruled by royalty in Europe have corresponded to the “livery colors” of the ruler’s coat of arms. The Liechtenstein National Flag is an example, however, where the livery colors and the arms are quite different. In the 19th century, the princes of Liechtenstein chose blue and red for the National Flag Of Liechtenstein—first given recognition in 1764 as the livery colors of Prince Joseph Wenzel—instead of the gold and red of their shield. The Flag Of Liechtenstein was given official status in the constitution of October 1921.
