The National Flag Of Mauritius was officially adopted On March 12, 1968. The Flag is known as “The Four Bands’ ‘and Was adopted when Mauritius gained independence. The Flag Of Mauritius design consists of four horizontal bands of Red, Blue, Yellow, And Green colors from top to the bottom. The Mauritius flag was designed by Gurudutt Moher who was a primary school teacher at that time.

The Mauritius National Flag colors have distinct meanings the red depicts the struggle for independence and freedom from colonial rule. The color Blue represents the Indian Ocean in the middle of which Mauritius is situated. The yellow represents the new light of independence shining over the island. The green color on the Flag Of Mauritius represents the green environment or agriculture and their appearance throughout the year.

 

Previous Flag Of Mauritius

Previous versions of flags used in Mauritius include the Dutch company flag when the Dutch East India occupied Mauritius. The flag they used then consisted of three equal horizontal bands of red white and blue. France took control of the island in 1715 after the Dutch left the island. From 1782 to 1810, still under French rule, the current flag of France was used as the National Flag Of Mauritius.

From 1869 to 1906, Mauritius was under British colonial rule and the flag consisted of a blue field with a Union Jack canton was used as the Mauritius National Flag. In 1906 to 1923, Mauritius still under British rule made some changes to the flag of 1896, a new coat of arms was designed, and it replaced the old coat of arms on the Flag Of Mauritius.
