The National Flag Of Mozambique was officially adopted On May 1, 1983. It includes the image of an AK-47 with a bayonet attached to the barrel crossed by a hoe, superimposed on an open book and is the only national flag in the world to feature such a modern firearm. The Flag Of Mozambique is based on the flag of the Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO), the leading political party in Mozambique.

FRELIMO was, and still is, the leading political party in Mozambique, and as such the movement’s flag was used after independence and the new Mozambique National Flag, revealed in 1983, is made up of many of FRELIMO’s colors and insignia.

 

Design And Meaning Of The Flag

The Flag Of Mozambique is a horizontal triband with an emblem on a triangle on the left side of the flag. The used colors in the flag are red, green, yellow, white, black. The Green color on the flag stands for the riches of the land, the white fimbriations signify peace.

The black on the National Flag Of Mozambique represents the African continent and yellow symbolizes the country’s minerals, and red represents the struggle for independence. The rifle stands for defense and vigilance and the open book symbolizes the importance of education. The hoe represents the country’s agriculture, and the star symbolizes Marxism and internationalism.

 

History Of The Flag

From 14th to the 19th century, Mozambique was a colony of Portugal. The Portuguese flag was flown during this time, it was a green and red vertical bicolor that featured the Portuguese coat of arms where the green and red meet. When Mozambique was about to gain independence from Portugal in late 1974 a new National Flag Of Mozambique was adopted.

This flag is similar to the flag of the Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO). In 1983 a Temporary flag was adopted in Mozambique, it was the pre-independence Mozambique National Flag with A black-lined cogwheel, hoe, AK-47. In the same year, the current Flag Of Mozambique was adopted, which featured the crossed hoe and AK-47 with open book and gold five-pointed star.
