The background of the flag is red. The current Norway National Flag was designed in 1821 by Fredrik Meltzer, a member of the parliament (Storting).

Meaning Of The Flag

The Norway flag is a tricolor of blue, red, and white denotes the country’s liberty and independence. The concept was borrowed from the colors of the French, American, and British flags. The blue cross on the Flag Of Norway represents Norway’s union with Sweden and its past association with Denmark. The cross is also a symbol associated with Christianity and is common in most Nordic countries. The cross divides the National Flag Of Norway into four parts with the white color bordering the blue cross.

History Of The Flag

In 1318, the Norway National Flag was more like a banner. It had a red background and a golden lion in the center, Duchess Ingebørg’s seal. Up until 1380 AD, Norway was an independent country. But that changed when the Danish and Norwegian throne was inherited by Olaf Haakonsson, which in turn created a union between Denmark and Norway.

At this time, the union effectively resulted in Norway adopting the Danish flag from the 1600s. Following the union with Sweden, Norway retained the ‘Daneborg’ flag as the National Flag Of Norway, but with a small adaption, the Norwegian lion was added to the top left corner. Norway yearned for freedom and independence, which led to a return to the “pure Norwegian flag” that was introduced in 1821.
