National Flag Of San Marino

National Flag Of San Marino

The San Marino National Flag was officially adopted On April 6, 1862. The Flag consists of two equal horizontal bands of white and light blue with the national coat of arms superimposed in the center. The coat of arms has a shield featuring three towers on three peaks with a closed crown on top, flanked by an oak and laurel wreath, with a scroll below bearing the word LIBERTAS (Liberty). The two colors of the Flag Of San Marino represent peace (white) and liberty (azure).

Coat of Arms

The official coat of arms of the Republic is surmounted by a closed crown, a symbol of sovereignty. Three green mountains are represented in the light-blue shield. On each mountain rises a silver embattled tower with windows and outlined in black, and a silver ostrich feather is over each of them. A green laurel branch on the left and a green oak branch on the right, with golden fruits, protect the shield’s sides and intersect under its point. These branches are wrapped together by a silver band on which LIBERTAS is written in black capital letters.

History Of The Flag

The oldest attested National Flag Of San Marino dates back from 4 September 1465, when it was commissioned from a manufacturer in Florence. In 1797, most likely influenced by the wave of reforms in France, the Supreme Council commissioned a white and blue cockade, which, coincidentally was identical to the one used by the French revolutionaries. The current Flag Of San Marino was adopted on 6 April 1862 by a Decree of the Supreme Council and since then.
