National Flag Of Slovakia

The Current National Flag Of Slovakia Was Officially Adopted On 3 September 1992. The Flag Of Slovakia features a horizontal tricolor with an emblem on the left. It consists of the white on the upper strip, the middle stripe is blue and the bottom one is red. These colors are conventional Slavonic shades. They symbolize Slavonic harmony and independence.

In the direction of the left side of the Slovakia National Flag is the state’s coat of arms, which is outlined in white. The double-cross on the emblem represents Christian tradition and memory of St. Cyril and St. Methodius, the two missionaries who came to Great Moravia in 863 to strengthen Christianity. The three hills represent Tatra, Matra and Fatra mountains.

History Of The Flag

During the revolutionary days of 1848–49, Slovak nationalists created a coat of arms different from that of Hungary by altering the hills to blue. The choice was based on the fact that white, blue, and red had been recognized as pan-Slavic colors since the leading Slavic power, Russia, had chosen them for its flag in 1699. As the Slovak Republic moved toward independence from Czechoslovakia and the new National Flag Of Slovakia was finally adopted on 1 March 1990. The coat of arms was added on 3 September 1992.
