The gold represents the sun and the aquamarine is a symbol of crystal clear waters. The two Aquamarine stripes represent the water that surrounds the islands: The Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

The yellow stripe on the Flag Of The Bahamas represents the sand and other rich land resources. The black triangle on the left side represents the people and their strength. Some believe that it stands for the black population of the island. Some also believe that the yellow stripe on The Bahamas National Flag evokes the sun, sand, and beautiful local beaches.

History Of The The Bahamas Flag

The Bahamian islands used to be a British colony until it gained independence in 1973 when the current National Flag Of The Bahamas was adopted as well. Following independence, the economy began to focus on trade and tourism. Under colonial rule, the Bahama Islands used the British Blue Ensign and defaced it with the emblem of the territory. The Bahama Islands were granted internal autonomy in 1964.

After the 1972 elections, the territory started negotiations on gaining independence. Local competition for a new Bahamas National Flag was held, although no single entry was chosen. Instead, many entries were combined to create the new flag. The Flag Of The Bahamas was approved on the day the Bahamas became an independent country. The new country also changed its name from the Bahama Islands to the Bahamas upon independence.
