A Short History of Australia

Aboriginal Australians have lived in the nation for at least 50,000 years. This means they have the oldest living cultural history in the world. Australia wasn’t really explored until 1770 when Captain James Cook explored the east coast and claimed it for Great Britain. He named it New South Wales.  The first British settlement is established in Sydney by Captain Arthur Phillip in 1788. It is the start of the British penal colony which is made up of most prisoners.

On January 1, 1901, the British Government passed an act to create the Commonwealth of Australia. In 1911, the Northern Territory became part of the Commonwealth. The first federal Parliament was opened in Melbourne in May 1901 by the Duke of York. Later, in 1927, the center of government and parliament moved to the city of Canberra.

Map of Australia is divided into six states and two territories. Five states can be found on the mainland, while the remaining state is an island located over 100 miles from the mainland. The states of Australia are represented in the parliament and are partially self-governing. The largest state by area in Western Australia with a total area of over 2.5 million square kilometers. The largest state by population in Australia is New South Wales. it has a massive population of over 8.15 million people.

The two major mainland territories are the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory. In addition to these, there are seven external territories – Ashmore and Cartier Islands, the Australian Antarctic Territory, Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, the Coral Sea Islands, Heard Island, and McDonald’s Islands, and Norfolk Islands.
