Manitoba is one of the 13 provinces and territories of Canada and is located in Central Canada. It is Canada’s fifth-most populous province, with a population of 1,278,365 as of 2016. Indigenous peoples have inhabited what is now Manitoba for thousands of years. In the early 17th century, British and French fur traders began arriving in the area and establishing settlements. The resolution of the Red River Rebellion conflict and further negotiations led to Manitoba becoming the fifth province to join the Canadian Confederation, when the Parliament of Canada passed the Manitoba Act on July 15, 1870.

The major River of Manitoba is the Saskatchewan, Red, Assiniboine, and Winnipeg rivers. Baldy Mountain is the province’s highest point at 832 meters (2,730 feet) above sea level.
Of Canada’s 10 provinces, Manitoba ranks third in water coverage. Lakes and rivers make up 101,590 km2 of the province, comprising one-sixth of its total area. The largest lakes are Winnipeg (24,387 km2), Winnipegosis (5,374 km2), and Manitoba (4,624 km 2).
