Newfoundland and Labrador are the most easterly provinces in Canada. These provinces are located on the Atlantic and are made up of the island of Newfoundland and mainland Labrador (hence the name). In 2018, the province’s population was estimated at 525,073. Over 90 percent of the population lives in Newfoundland and the surrounding islands. St. John’s is the provincial capital of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Formerly a colony and then a dominion of the United Kingdom, Newfoundland gave up its independence in 1933. It became the tenth and final province to enter Confederation on March 31, 1949, as “Newfoundland”. On December 6, 2001, an amendment was made to the Constitution of Canada to change the province’s name to Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador is located in the extreme easternmost part of Canada. Newfoundland shares a border on the north, east, and south by the Atlantic Ocean and separated on the northwest from Labrador by the Strait of Belle Isle. Labrador is bounded on the east by the Atlantic Ocean down to the Strait of Belle Isle and on the south and west by Quebec. Cape Chidley, Labrador’s northernmost point, is on the Hudson Strait. Its capital city is St. John’s (on Newfoundland).

Covering a total area of 370,514 sq. km, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador is composed of the roughly triangular-shaped Newfoundland Island along with the irregular-shaped Labrador on the mainland. In addition to Newfoundland Island, the province also includes 12 large islands and about 7,170 small islands. The Torngat Mountains is Mount d’Iberville (Mount Caubvick), which rises to an elevation of 1,652m and is the highest point in the province. Some major rivers in Labrador include Churchill, Naskaupi, Macatina. Major Lakes are Melville, Atikonak, and Smallwood Reservoir in Labrador.
