The city was founded in 1826 and named Bytown after Colonel John By who was responsible for the entire Rideau Canal construction project. In 1855 Bytown was incorporated as a city and renamed Ottawa. By ‘Queen’s choice’, Ottawa became the capital of Canada on New Year’s Eve of 1857.

Some of the notable rivers of the province include Niagara, Missinaibi, Grand, Severn, Winisk, Attawapiskat, Abitibi, Albany, Ottawa, etc. The province also comprises many significant lakes including Abitibi, Nipigon, Lake of the Woods, Big Trout, Simcoe, etc.
