As of May 2017, India had completed and placed into use over 28,900 kilometers (18,000 mi) of four- or more-lane highways connecting many of its major manufacturing, commercial and cultural centers. The Indian roads carry almost 90 percent of the country’s passenger traffic. In India sales of automobiles and the movement of freight by roads are growing at a rapid rate.
