While there are several types of United States map that exist in order to cartography, there are six types of US map that immediately come to your mind. Physical maps, Political maps, Topographic maps, Climate maps, Economic or resource maps, Road maps and Thematic maps are so common that anybody would recognize them. However, other map of America is used only by professionals in specialized fields.
The United States of America (USA), for short United States (U.S.) or America is a federal republic composed of 50 states with a federal district, five vital self-governing territories and several possessions. Among these fifty states of America, forty eight of them including the federal district are neighboring and located in North America in between Mexico and Canada. The total land area of the United States is 9,833,517 Km² which is the fourth largest country in the world by total area.

Political Maps of the USA: US Political maps are widely used US map that you see most of the time. This map of America is focus on the boundaries, cities, states, and capitals. However, a political map does not show any topographic features like mountains. In general, a US political map always represents the 50 US states and each state borders along with the America’s international borders.
Physical Maps of the USA: US Physical maps are representing the physical landscape of each place like mountains, rivers, and lakes.Every type of places in this US map has different color like blue represents bodies of water, brown shows high elevations and green shows lower elevations.
Topographical Maps of the USA: US Topographical maps are similar to Physical map of America that shows different physical landscape features. However, US Topographical maps use contour lines rather than colors to show changes in landscape.Contour lines on this map are usually spaced at regular intervals to show elevation changes. When lines are close together the terrain is steep. Each line signifies a 100-foot or 30m elevation change.
Climate Maps of the USA: US Climate maps shows information about the climate of an area. Different colors are usually differentiated by temperature or climate of different climatic zones of an area (like a rainforest, desert, etc.).
Economic or Resource Maps of the USA: Economic or resource map of America shows economic activity or natural resource in an area using different colors or symbols depending on what is being shown on the map. ThisUS map clearly shows the US economy and resources.
Road Maps of the USA: US Road maps are one of the most widely used maps of America. These US maps represent major and minor highways and roads as well as airports, city locations, campgrounds, parks, and monuments. Usually, major highways on a road map show in red which is larger than other roads and minor roads are lighter color and a narrower line. US Road maps also show county roads, major city arteries, and rural routes which are usually represented in shades of gray or white.
Thematic Maps of the USA: US Thematic maps are focuses on a particular theme or special topic. These maps are slightly different from other US map as it doesn’t represent natural features like rivers, cities, elevation, political subdivisions, and highways.
