It is home to every single one of the top ten highest summits in the U.S. Though the top ten all call The Last Frontier home, they are scattered throughout three different mountain ranges. The Alaska Range is home to 15 major summits in total. Three summits from the Alaska Range made the top ten list, including the very highest major summit not only in the U.S. but in all of North America: Denali.

Major Mountain Ranges

Appalachian Mountains

The Appalachian Mountains run for 1,500 miles along the east coast of the United States from northern Alabama to Maine. The highest point of the Appalachians is 6,684 feet at Mount Mitchell in North Carolina.

The Rocky Mountains

The lyrics of a popular song from the 1970s mention Colorado, forests, streams, and lakes, all of which are synonymous with the Rocky Mountains. This mountain range is the second largest in the world and the longest in the United States. Although it contains some of the highest peaks found in North America, the absolute highest peak is not found here.

The Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada mountain range, the youngest of the three, is characterized by breathtaking caverns, flowers, meadows, lakes, waterfalls, and granite formations, all adding to its scenic beauty. It’s described as the dream of anyone who loves the outdoors and the splendor of nature. This is the home of Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe, which is described as having cobalt blue waters that reflect the sky.
