The United States of America (USA) is located in central North America, between Canada and Mexico. It has a total area of 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million square kilometers) making it the world’s third- or fourth-largest country by total area. With a population of over 328 million, it is the 3rd most populous country in the world. The State Map of the USA consists of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories.

From the 50 states, 48 are situated within the mainland. Alaska and Hawaii are a group of islands located in the South Pacific seas. The capital of the US is the federal district of Washington, D.C.  Each state features a state-level government. How the US Expanded to 50 States?

In the time of the independence of the USA in 1776, There were Thirteen British Colonies. These thirteen colonies became the first 13 states as each ratified the Constitution. After the establishment of the United States, the number of states has expanded from the original 13 to 50, the current amount since 1959.

After the Revolutionary War, the United States occupied large sections of land to the west of the 13 colonies. At first, this land was organized into large territories such as the Northwest Territory. Over time, many of these territories became states such as Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio.

In 1803, Louisiana Purchase bought a large area of land from France. It nearly doubled the size of the country. After the defeat of Mexico in the Mexican-American War, the United States gained more territory from Mexico through the Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo. The Oregon Treaty is an agreement signed between Britain and the United States. This treaty gave the United States land that would later become the states of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho as well as parts of Montana and Wyoming.

The southern portions of Arizona and New Mexico were gained from the Gadsden Purchase in 1853. The last two states to join the unions were Alaska and Hawaii.
