China has a wide range of marine and inland fisheries that support a similarly wide variety of marine and freshwater fish that are native to the country. There are more than 700 freshwater species and thousands of marine species in China.
China is the world’s leading exporter of fish. Extensive fishing has resulted in a decline of most of these species in their native habitats leaving some at risk of extinction. Others are exploited in commercial aquariums and ponds. With a volume of 33.57 million metric tons in 2005, the country contributed about 70 percent of the world’s total aquaculture production and 66 percent of China’s total seafood production.
