Fuzzy kiwifruit is the Official National Fruit of China. The Scientific Name of Fuzzy kiwifruit is Actinidia deliciosa. Other species of Actinidia are also found in China and range east to Japan and north into southern areas of the Russian Far East. In 2016, the global production of kiwifruit was 4.3 million tonnes, led by China with 56% of the world’s total. In China, it is grown mainly in the mountainous area upstream of the Yangtze River. It is also grown in other areas of China, including Sichuan. Italy and New Zealand were other major producers.

Physical Characteristics

Actinidia deliciosa Grows up to 15-30 ft. tall (4-9 m) and 6-10 ft. wide (2-3 m). It is in flower from July to August, and the seeds ripen from October to December. The species is dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required) and is pollinated by Bees, and insects. The plant is not self-fertile.
Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy), and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: acid soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil. China national fruit.

Leaves
