Oregon is a Pacific northwestern state in the United States (US), located between Washington and California. The state consists of 8 geographic areas including coastlines, valleys, mountains, and high altitude deserts. Various climates occur throughout the state due to its varied geography. Oregon covers an area of 98,381 square miles and has an estimated total population of 4.14 million people. Nicknamed the ‘Beaver State’, Oregon possesses some of the most varied landscapes in all of America including volcanoes, mountains, forests, high deserts, and large bodies of water.

  1. Portland

Located in Multnomah County, of which it is the county seat, Portland is by far the largest city in the state of Oregon. This major port city is situated in the northwestern part of the state and was named after a city of the same name in Maine. Portland covers an area 145 square miles and has an estimated population of 647,000, with over 2.3 million in the surrounding metropolitan area.

 

  1. Salem

Located in Marion County, of which it is the county seat, Salem is the second-largest city in the state of Oregon. It is situated in the northwestern part of Oregon and is also the state capital. Salem covers an area of 48.45 square miles and has an estimated population of 167,000, with over 400,000 people living in the surrounding metropolitan area.

 

  1. Eugene

This city of 156,185 people places a high value on nature. With 4,000 acres of parks and urban forests, it is estimated Eugene’s natural resources bring $42 million to the local economy each year. Eugene was founded in 1846 and incorporated in 1862. It was named after Eugene Franklin Skinner, an explorer who founded the town.

 

  1. Gresham

The fourth-largest city in Oregon has a population of 105,594. Gresham has seen a population increase of 16.53 percent since 2010. Among the major employers are Boeing Portland and Brooks Automation. Gresham was founded in the mid-19th century and incorporated in 1905. It was named after Walter Gresham, a Republican statesman, and jurist.

 

  1. Hillsboro

This city has a population of 91,000 and is home to Intel Corp.’s semiconductor research and development operations.
