In 1598, however, the region was colonized by the Spanish and made a province of New Spain. This was frustrating to the Pueblo people, who revolted against the Spanish in 1680 in the Pueblo Revolt. Subsequently, they recovered the area and maintained their independence until 1692, when the Spanish regained control.
