Providence City Is The Official State Capital Of Rhode Island. Providence is one of the oldest cities in the United States and it was founded by Roger Williams in 1636. National Capital Of Rhode Island Providence became a major New World seaport and prospered early in its history. The Providence City is situated at the mouth of the Providence River at the head of Narragansett Bay. Rhode Island State Capital Providence was one of the first cities in the country to industrialize and became noted for its textile manufacturing and subsequent machine tool, jewelry, and silverware industries. Today, the city is home to eight hospitals and seven institutions of higher learning which have shifted the city’s economy into service industries. 

 

State Capital Of Rhode Island Providence was never occupied by British troops during the War of Independence. In subsequent years, the city built a reputation as a manufacturing center and receiving its city charter, in 1832. The anti-immigration Know-Nothing Party gained control over Providence in 1856, but its influence declined rapidly. The Republican Party assumed political control over Providence which it retained until the 1930s. Following the war, the State Capital Of Rhode Island Providence continued its industrial progress. America’s largest steam engine factory was situated in Providence and supplied the mammoth steam engine that powered exhibits at the Philadelphia Exposition of 1876.

 

In 1762 the Old State House was built in the National Capital Of Rhode Island Providence. Between 1681 and 1854, the government of Rhode Island rotated between Providence, Newport, Bristol, East Greenwich, and Kingston. In 1854 Newport and Providence became the only capitals, only in 1901, Rhode Island State Capital Providence became the sole capital of Rhode Island. Today, the city has a population of about 180,500 inhabitants.
