Golden Delicious Apple Is The Official State Fruit Of West Virginia. West Virginia adopted the apple as the official state fruit in 1972. The State Amended the resolution in 1995 to specify the golden delicious apple as the West Virginia State Fruit. Anderson Mullins discovered this apple variety in Clay County in 1905 (“Clay County Golden Delicious Festival” celebrates the famous fruit annually since 1972). State Fruit Of West Virginia Apples are members of the rose family, or Rosaceae, and the genus Malus. Malus pumila is The common wild apple of Europe and Asia.

Other wild species are Malus sylvestris and Malus baccata. Cultivated apples are also called Malus pumila. They may also be descended from one or more of the other wild species. West Virginia State Fruit Golden Delicious apples are known for their yellowish-green peel, white flesh inside and sweet taste. They are commonly used in a variety of ways including applesauce and apple butter. Other than being “delicious” this apple variety is the state fruit of West Virginia because the original seed and tree grew in Clay Couty, West Virginia on the farm of the Mullin’s family.

Originally called the Mullins Yellow Seedling, the head of the Mullin’s family sold his famous tree to Stark Brother’s Nursery in 1914. The Stark Brother were the purveyors of the Red Delicious and renamed the apple to Golden Delicious as a companion. West Virginia State FruitGolden Delicious apple was now available to be sold outside of West Virginia where it gained much popularity. In fact, Stark Brother’s still sells State Fruit Of West Virginia Golden Delicious Apple Trees this day.
