Situated in the western section of the United States, Utah is the 13th largest state in terms of land area and the 31st most populous state. It covers an area of 84,899 square miles in total and has an estimated population of 3.1 million, making it the 10th most sparsely populated state. Nicknamed the ‘Beehive State’ and ‘The Mormon State’, Utah is perhaps best-known as the home of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church. The Wasatch Front counties of the state have the highest population concentration. These counties include Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, and Weber.

  1. Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City is Utah’s capital and most populous city. It is located in Salt Lake County and had a population of 186,440 in 2010. The world headquarters of the LDS Church is located in this city. It was established in 1847 by Brigham Young and other adherents of the LSD Church (the Pioneers). They built the city as a safe refuge to escape religious persecution in the mid-western US.

Located in Salt Lake County, West Valley City is the second-largest city in Utah. This city is technically a suburb of the state capital, Salt Lake City, and covers a total area of 35.5 square miles. The estimated population of West Valley City is 133,000. As with Salt Lake City, West Valley City was settled in the 19th century.

Located in Utah County, of which it is the county seat, Provo is the third-largest city in the state of Utah. It is situated on the Wasatch Front, which is located in the central part of the state, around 40 miles south of Salt Lake City. Provo covers an area of 44.2 square miles and has a total estimated population of 117,000, with over 526,000 in the metropolitan area.

West Jordan, the fourth biggest city in Utah, had a population of 103,712 individuals in 2010. It is also located in Salt Lake County and is one of the suburbs of Salt Lake City. It stretches from the western bank of the Jordan River to the eastern foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains. It is one of Utah’s fastest-growing cities. West Jordan has a mixed economy.

Situated in Utah County in the north-central part of the state, Orem is the fifth biggest city in Utah. It covers a total area of 18.3 square miles and has an estimated population of 90,000. Orem is situated in close proximity to Provo and forms the Provo-Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area.
