Many Indigenous Nations inhabited this area for thousands of years before European exploration. The first Europeans to explore the Oregon area are Spanish explorers. An autonomous government was formed in the Oregon Country, and the Oregon Territory was created in 1848. British ceded Oregon to the US in 1846 and Oregon became the 33rd state on 14th February 1859. Oregon is one of the most geographically diverse states in the United State. It shares borders with Washington, Idaho, California, and Nevada.
