Tennessee is a landlocked state in the southeastern United States. It shares borders with Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, and Virginia. The region was first inhabited by Paleo Indians some 12,000 years ago. Spanish explorer first arrived in this area. What is now Tennessee was originally a part of North Carolina. In 1776, the 13 colonies achieved their independence from the British, and Tennessee was declared a free state. Tennessee joined the Union as the 16th state on June 1, 1796.
