Lebanon’s national assembly building is revivalist of orientalism and predated the golden age of the 1950’s that would turn Beirut into the Arab world’s avant-garde capital.
Since its independence in 1926, the electoral laws of the unicameral parliament are based on a confessional quorum.
But as the relative political weight of the confessional groups is a highly sensitive issue, no official census has been carried out since 1932.
