Pinyon pine is the State Tree of New Mexico. Pinus resinosa is the scientific name of Pinyon pine and it is commonly known as Pinon pine. It is also known as the Colorado pinyon, pinyon pine, Rocky Mountain pinyon, and two-needle pinyon. Pinus are the genus of the Pinyon pine and P. edulis is its species. The New Mexico’s State tree Pinyon pine is belongs from the family of Pinaceae.

It is a small, drought-hardy, long-lived tree, which is widely spread in the southwestern Unites States. It is found mostly in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona with little populations in some of the neighboring states. Pines are among the most abundant and commercially imperative tree species. It is mostly important for timber and pulp round the world. That’s why it is widely spread and it is grown in different parts of the world. On basis of the facts that stated above, on March 16, 1949 the state General Assembly of New Mexico designated the Pine as the official state tree of New Mexico. It is not only the State tree of New Mexico but it is also State/national tree of many other countries or states with its variety.

Common name:  Pinus edulis is also known as the Colorado pinyon, pinyon pine, Rocky Mountain pinyon, and two-needle pinyon.

Leaf:  The leaves of the Pinyon pine called ‘needle’, which are generating in bundles of two leaves. The “needles” are usually thick, curved, blue-green or yellow-green, rigid, and one to two inches long .
Fruits:  The fruits of Pinyon pine called ‘cone’. There are two types of cone have the pine trees, which one for generates pollen and another for develop and dropping the seeds. The cones are proportionately ovoid; brown in color, 2 inches long with short stalk. The fruits have been matured in the period of September and October.
Purpose: ornamental.
Symbolism: Wisdom and longevity, peace, virtue, good luck, prosperity, and good health, fertility, masculinity, and winter.
