Fresno is located in central California in the San Joaquin Valley of California and has a population of around 542,107 in 2020. It is the fifth-most populous city in California and the 34th-most populous city in the nation. It is the county seat of Fresno County and the largest city in the greater Central Valley region.

The San Joaquin Valley area was first inhabited by the Yokuts people who traded with other tribes of Native Americans in the state. In 1872, it was a railway station depot for the Central Pacific Railroad line. By 1885, Fresno was formally incorporated as a town along the San Joaquin River and people began moving in.
