Raleigh is a city located in Wake County North Carolina. It is the capital and second-most populous city in North Carolina, the tenth-most populous city in the Southeast, and the 41st-most populous city in the U.S. Raleigh is known as the “City of Oaks”, for its dense forest of an oak tree. The city covers a land area of 147.6 square miles (382 km2).
Following the American Revolutionary War when the U.S. gained independence, this was chosen as the site of the state capital in 1788 and incorporated in 1792 as such. In 1792, the North Carolina legislature authorized the purchase of land to establish a capital city. Said and done, in the same year, Raleigh was founded as the capital of North Carolina. Two years later they built the State House.
