Rochester is a city located in Monroe County, in the state of New York, United States. With a 2023 population of 211,556, it is the 4th largest city in New York and the 119th largest city in the United States. Located in Western New York, the city of Rochester forms the core of a larger metropolitan area with a population of 1 million people, across six counties.

Rochester is located in Monroe County, which is situated in the northwestern part of the state. The city covers an area of approximately 37 square miles (96 square kilometers) and is bordered by Irondequoit Bay to the north, Lake Ontario to the northwest, the town of Greece to the west, and the towns of Brighton and Henrietta to the south.

The city is located on relatively flat land, with rolling hills and valleys to the south and east. The elevation in Rochester ranges from around 200 feet (60 meters) above sea level in the downtown area to around 600 feet (180 meters) in some of the higher elevations outside the city.
