Meaning Of The Flag

The colors of the Gambian National Flag carry cultural, political, and regional meanings. The center stripe on the Flag Of Gambia is blue to symbolize the river that is the main resource of the country and the basis for its name. The red stripe suggesting the sun and the equatorial position of the country. The green color stripe on the bottom symbolizes the agricultural produce, grains, and citrus fruits on which citizens rely on exports and their own consumption. The white stripes on the National Flag Gambia separating the blue from the green and red are said to stand for peace and unity.

 

Background

In 1661, the British arrived on the modern-day Gambia and managed to conquer James Island. The Gambia had become a British protectorate and in 1888 it became part of the British colony. It was agreed between the British and Gambian delegations that the Gambia would receive full independence in 1965 but the head of state would still be Elizabeth II.

Following their independence, the government decided that instead of the Queen, they would choose an elected Prime Minister and on April 24th, 1970 Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara was declared the Prime Minister and head of state.
