The National Flag Of Suriname was officially adopted On 25 November 1975, upon the independence of Suriname. The Suriname National Flag features five bands of green, white and red, arranged horizontally. In the center of the red stripe, there is a gold star, which represents the diverse ethnic groups present in Suriname.
The colors of every band on the Flag Of Suriname also have their own meaning. While Green stripes for the country’s jungles and agricultural lands, white for justice and freedom, and red for the progressive spirit of a young nation. The Suriname flag was selected as a result of a nationally sponsored competition and the winning design was the work of Jacques Herman Pinas.
Flag Before 1975
Prior to becoming an independent country in 1975, Suriname was represented by a white National Flag Of Suriname with five stars of different colors that were adopted in 1959. A similarly designed flag of the governor was also used during this time.
