History Of The Flag

In 1963, Comoros chose a distinctive local flag designed by the French heraldist Suzanne Gauthier While still French territory. The green background and crescent on the Flag Of Comoros reflected the Islamic majority population, and its four white stars represented the islands in the archipelago. The flag was changed in 1975 under Ali Soilih. When that government was overthrown in 1978, a variation of the first flag was adopted.

With the adoption of a new constitution in 1992, the Comoros National Flag changed again such that the crescent and stars were rotated to face upward rather than down and to the right. Anjouan and Mohéli island declared independence from Comoros in 1997. But that move was not internationally recognized. In an attempt to restore unity in Comoros, the national government drafted a new constitution, which was promulgated on December 23, 2001. At that time the current Flag Of Comoros became official.
