India is a large country comprising 28 states and 7 union territories. These states and the union territories are divided into districts. At the time of the Census 2001, there were in all 593 districts against 467 districts at the time of the 1991 Census.

India has the second-highest population among the countries in the world, with more than 1.2 billion inhabitants. India covers an area of 32,87,263 sq. km (1,269,346 sq mi) and it is the 7th largest country in the world. As of 2011, the country had 27 cities with populations exceeding one million. These cities comprise about 43% of the country’s urban population.

There are mainly four metropolitan cities in India named Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai. Delhi is also the capital of India and its political capital too. Maharashtra’s prominent city Mumbai is the economical and entertainment capital of India. Kolkata is one of the largest cities of west India and Chennai is one of the largest cities of South India. Tier-II cities are more like metropolitan but are not officially designated as metropolitans like Bengaluru, Lucknow, Bhopal, etc. Some of the tier 2 cities are known for their beautiful landscape too.
