State Motto Of West Virginia

The Term “Montani Semper Liberi” (Meaning: “Mountaineers are Always Free”) Is The Official State Motto Of West Virginia. This motto was adopted with Article II, Section 2-7 of the state constitution signed in 1872. The West Virginia State Motto was suggested by the artist Joseph H. DisDebar.  Joseph H. DisDebar was also the creative spirit behind the state seal.

The State Motto Of West Virginia was adopted in 1863 along with the Great Seal of the State of West Virginia. In 1863.  the year when West Virginia became a state independent of Virginia. In this way, the West Virginia motto represents patriotic values of freedom and independence.
