Ohio Buckeye Tree Is The Official State Tree Of Ohio. Ohio buckeye (Aesculus glabra) was Adopted as the official state tree in 1953. The Ohio Buckeye tree derives the name from its large brown seeds, which resemble the eyes of the white-tailed deer. People commonly confuse the Ohio State Tree Buckeye tree with the Horse Chestnut, (Aesculus hippocastanum.) In addition, the Yellow Buckeye, (Aesculus octandra,) also grows in Ohio. It is closely related to the Ohio Buckeye, and it is difficult to differentiate between the two species. The State Tree Buckeye Tree will always be associated with Ohio because the Ohio Territory was the first area to be settled after the Revolutionary War. When these early settlers arrived here, one of the things they first noticed was the buckeye trees. 

 

Identification of the Ohio Buckeye

State Tree Of Ohio Buckeye Tree is about 40-60′ tall, forming a single trunk about 1-2′ across and a much-branched ovoid crown. At optimal sites, larger Buckeye trees have been found exceeding 70′ tall. The trunk bark is gray and rough-textured, becoming scaly, warty, and slightly furrowed with age. Ohio State Tree bark of branches and twigs is gray and smooth. Pairs of opposite compound leaves are produced from young twigs. These leaves are palmately compound with 5-7 leaflets. The slender petioles of the compound leaves are 3-6″ long, light green. Individual leaflets are 3-6″ long and 1-2″ across; they are elliptic or elliptic-oblanceolate in shape, serrated along their margins, and nearly sessile. The upper surface of the leaflets is medium to dark green and glabrous, while the lower surface is pale green and usually hairless; sometimes there are tiny hairs along the lower ribs of the central veins. State Tree Of Ohio Buckeye Tree grows best in deep fertile soils, will usually reach maturity in 60-80 years.
