Baltimore is located in north-central Maryland on the Patapsco River close to where it empties into the Chesapeake Bay. Baltimore is located about 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Washington DC. It is the largest city in the state of Maryland and the 24th largest city in the United States. The city is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Maryland and the 30th most populous city in the United States, with a population of 585,708 in 2020.

As a municipality within Baltimore County, Baltimore City was incorporated in 1796 by legislation that took effect in 1797. The City name was derived from the Proprietary’s Irish Barony. As a governmental unit, the City separated from Baltimore County in 1851 and has been considered on a par with county jurisdictions since the adoption of the Maryland Constitution of 1851.
